IPL 2025 Retained players list
With the IPL 2024 season wrapped up, there’s already a lot of excitement about the next season’s players. When thinking about IPL 2025, the big question is which players the franchises will choose to keep.
Since the Mega Auction is set for 2025, the anticipation around which players will be retained is growing. Retaining players is crucial for any team because it allows them to keep their top performers with new contracts.
Before the Mega Auction, teams announce their list of retained players. Even though it’s early, let’s take a look at the potential retained players for IPL 2025. IPL 2025 Retention Policies
The IPL governing council has confirmed that a mega auction will take place for IPL 2025. This auction happens every three years, giving teams a chance to reshape their squads.
According to reports, teams will have a limited number of players they can retain, with the rest entering the auction pool. Each team may also get a Right to Match (RTM) card, allowing them to keep a player by matching the highest bid during the auction.
The exact date and location for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction haven’t been announced yet. The last mega auction was in 2022 at a private hotel in Bengaluru. The BCCI will soon reveal the details about the date and venue.
IPL 2025 Retention Deadline
Before the mega auction, IPL teams must submit their list of retained players to the BCCI, following the IPL retention rules. This list is usually required about a month before the auction, so expect it around November or December 2024.
IPL Player Retention Policies
Each team has a 100 crore budget for the IPL auction, and according to the rules, 75% of this budget must be used for player salaries.
Salary caps and retention rules are important factors in retaining IPL players. The BCCI has set specific retention policies, where teams pay a portion of their budget to keep a player. Here’s how the salaries for retained players are distributed.
Player 1 Salary up to 14 crore
Player 2 Salary up to 10 crore
Player 3 Salary up to 7 crore
Player 4 Salary up to 6 crore
If teams decide to retain four players, they’ll use up nearly half of their budget, so it will be interesting to see which players they choose to keep for the next season’s Mega Auction.
Releasing a player is also a key decision, as it allows teams to focus on building a stronger core for the next season.
For example, RCB might release Faf du Plessis due to his age and focus on retaining younger players. Glen Maxwell’s performance in the 2024 IPL might also lead RCB to release him for the next season.
Teams like Rajasthan Royals and KKR have many strong players, making their retention decisions even more challenging.
